    Want to be a Secret Santa to an animal in need? The Shelter's Caring Paws for the Cause giving trees have been placed at Petcetra and at Vans IGA North with the Shelter’s “Wish List” for the holiday season.  The giving trees benefit the animals at the Shelter. Secret Santa’s (donors) are asked to take a “tag” from the tree and purchase the item listed. Items can be returned directly to the donation collection box at each location or taken to the Shelter. The Caring Paws for the Cause trees will be up through the week of Christmas.

    Fire Chief Randy McCamley announced that he will be retiring at the end of December, after serving Great Falls Fire Rescue (GFFR) and the community for over 31 years. Randy began his tenure with the City of Great Falls in 1983 as a probationary firefighter, making just $4.75 an hour! Since he began his career, Randy has held a number of positions within GFFR including Firefighter, Firefighter 1st Class, Engineer, Captain, Battalion Chief/EMT until being promoted to Fire Chief in 2002. The City wishes him the best in his retirement and knows that exciting things are waiting in his future

    Eagle Falls Golf Club is now open to the public for cross country skiing and snowshoeing.  Hours are Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.   The road is not plowed so guests should plan accordingly.  The rules and the course map will be posted at the gate as well as an open/closed sign.  There is no charge to ski or snowshoe.

    It’s time to get your teams signed up for the 2015 City League Adult Basketball season.  Registration will begin on Monday, December 1, and continue through Monday, January 12, 2015.  Teams are registered on a first come/first served basis.  Team managers can register at the Park and Recreation office, 1700 River Drive North, 8 am- 5  pm. Men’s and Women’s leagues are offered.

    Did you know that there is now a day focused just on generosity and giving? On Giving Tuesday, charities, families, businesses and communities around the world can come together for one common purpose – to give. The Great Falls Animal Shelter is getting into the spirit this season by sponsoring a Giving Tuesday Adoption Event. On Tuesday, December 2, from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., new pet owners can adopt dogs and cats for $10 plus a donation towards the Guardian Angel Fund.

    City offices including the Great Falls Public Library, Community Recreation Center, Natatorium and the Great Falls Animal Shelter will be closed Thursday and Friday, November 27 and 28 for the Thanksgiving Holiday. The Shelter will also be closed on Saturday (11/29). There will be no sanitation collection on Thursday (11/27) and garbage collection will be one day later than the regular schedule for customers on Thursday and Friday.

    Each holiday season the Forestry Division provides the Christmas tree that is placed in front of the Civic Center. This year the 40-foot spruce tree will be moved to the Civic Center on Friday, November 21, between 8 am-12 p.m. In order to allow room for the flat bed trailer to move the tree all vehicles from 2nd Avenue North, starting at 38th Street to 9th Street, should be moved off the street on Friday morning. The Christmas tree will be lit for the first time on Saturday, November, 29 as part of the Parade of Lights.

    Great Falls Public Library Director Kathy Mora and volunteer Pat Carroll received the Montana Literacy Award this fall for their work in developing the Little Free Libraries in Great Falls.  This award was given by the Montana State Reading Council. According to the Council’s website, any individual, agency or institution who promotes literacy within the community is eligible to receive the MSRC Literacy Award.

    Charter Communications moved to an all new digital platform in Great Falls, all Public, Education and Government (PEG) channels were moved to a “Public Affairs Neighborhood” on their channel lineup. A part of this conversion included the City’s channel 7 (City-7) becoming channel 190 (City-190). These changes took place on or about November 24, 2014.

    Due to the snow and cold temperatures the City of Great Falls Forestry Division will not be picking up leaves on Monday and Tuesday.  With the cold temperatures snow is not melting and it is impossible for homeowners to rake leaves. Leaf pick up was scheduled to be completed on Tuesday, however, in areas where the leaves have not been raked or picked up, residents are being asked to bag the leaves and put them out by garbage containers for pickup.

    The City of Great Falls is pleased to announce that Joseph Petrella will be joining the City as the new Park and Recreation Director. Joseph comes to Great Falls from Alexandria, Virginia, where he currently serves as the Division Chief for Recreation Services. Joseph has a broad background in recreation management with over sixteen years of experience. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of Connecticut and a Master of Science in Recreation Management from the University of Illinois. He is a Certified Park and Recreation Executive (CPRE) through the National Recreation and Park Association.
