    Time is running out to attend the 2nd Annual Great Falls Animal Shelter Murder Mystery Party! “Murder Among the Mateys,” will be held on Saturday, March 1, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Eagles Lodge (1501 9th Street S). The cost to attend is $25 per character/$45 per character couple and $20 for those attending, but not playing a character. The evening includes a silent auction, hors d’oeuvres and beverages. For tickets and more information, contact Laura McElhinney, volunteer coordinator at 452-1068.

There will be no changes to the residential or commercial sanitation collection schedule. The Community Recreation Center and Natatorium will be open on Monday during their regular business hours.

    Great Falls Fire Rescue recently hired three new firefighters to fill vacancies within the organization.  Becoming a firefighter is extremely competitive.     The Library’s Youth Services Department is hosting a party on Friday, March 14, from 4:00 – 5:45 pm. This party is geared towards children kindergarten through 3rd grade accompanied by a parent of guardian. Youth Services Librarian Nola Huey will read the five picture books nominated for the 2014 Montana Treasure State Picture Book Award. After hearing the five stories, children can then vote for their favorite. In order to vote, however, children must listen to all five stories. This year’s nominees are Hanging of Jefferson’s Nose, Larf, The Lonely Book, Three Ninja Pigs, and Jangles.

    Change a pet’s life by providing them a forever home. Tuesday, January 21, through Friday, January 31, shelter pets that are 6 months and older can be adopted for only $25. The adoption fee includes a rabies shot, vaccinations and the cost of spaying/neutering your new pet. Existing pet owners, who are interested in adopting, are asked to bring proof of rabies vaccinations for their current pets.

    The City of Great Falls, Cascade County and the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) have initiated a community transportation planning process to update their existing Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP). The Plan provides a blueprint for guiding transportation infrastructure investments based on identified needs. The third and final informational meeting will be held on Thursday, January 23, 2014 in Great Falls at the Civic Center, Missouri Room, 2 Park Drive South at 6 p.m.

    The City Commission selected Steve Bolstad at the City’s new Municipal Court Judge. Bolstad must be formally appointed by the City Commission. He will be replacing Judge Nancy Luth who will be retiring at the end of the month after a career spanning over twenty years as the Municipal Court Judge. Bolstad will serve until the next municipal general election in 2015.

    The Great Falls Public Library is now offering book discussion kits for checkout.  These kits contain 10 books per kit, along with discussion guides and information on starting and maintaining book discussion groups and clubs. The kits may be checked out for 45 days, with renewal if needed. Currently, the library has 14 titles for checkout.  As the kits grow in popularity, additional titles may be added.

    This City is currently seeking applicants for municipal court judge. The position is being vacated by Judge Nancy Luth, who will be retiring at the end of January 2014. Interest forms and resumes are due to the City Clerk’s Office by 5 p.m. on Friday, January 3, and are available online or in the City Clerk and City Manager’s Offices. The City Commission will be interviewing the top candidates individually at an open meeting and anticipate having an appointment made by the end of January.
