    The City of Great Falls is pleased to announce that Joseph Petrella will be joining the City as the new Park and Recreation Director. Joseph comes to Great Falls from Alexandria, Virginia, where he currently serves as the Division Chief for Recreation Services. Joseph has a broad background in recreation management with over sixteen years of experience. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of Connecticut and a Master of Science in Recreation Management from the University of Illinois. He is a Certified Park and Recreation Executive (CPRE) through the National Recreation and Park Association.

    The Great Falls Public Library Foundation is excited to announce that the 25th Annual Book-A-Thon, begins November 1. One half of the proceeds are used to purchase children’s books for the library. The other half is reserved to ensure that future Great Falls area children will also benefit from the very best children’s literature. With your donation, you can support the many thousands of local children who read the library’s books, use its resources or attend the library’s various children’s programs.     Eagle Falls and Anaconda Hills Golf Courses will close for the season this week. The last day of play at both courses will be Friday, October 31, weather permitting.     The City's Leaf Pickup Program begins next week Monday, October 27 through Tuesday, November 18. Residents within the Boulevard District area are being requested to deposit leaves on the boulevard next to the curb and not in the street gutter. For those residing within the Boulevard District, the Natural Resources Division will vacuum leaves from the boulevards. The City's Street Division will be sweeping streets in conjunction with the leaf pick-up.

    Municipal Court will be closed on Monday, October 13, in recognition of the Columbus Day Holiday. Per State Statute, all courts in the state must be closed on statutorily recognized holidays. All other City facilities and offices will be open for business on Monday. The court will resume normal business hours on Tuesday.

    This year marks 100 years of women voting in the State of Montana. The public is invited to a free, fun and educational program Saturday, October 11, from 2-4 p.m. in the Missouri Room of the Civic Center sponsored by the Historic Preservation Advisory Commission, the Downtown Chicks and Preservation Cascade, Inc.  The program will include a welcome from Lieutenant Governor Angela McLean, living history performers and storytellers highlighting the significance of the suffrage movement as well as music from the era.

    In recognition of National Pit Bull Awareness Month the Great Falls Animal Shelter is offering free Bully Breed Training Sessions for you and your dog on Saturday, October 4. Two training sessions are being offered at F&L Pet Resort (2500 17th St. N.E.) at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Class size is limited to 25 per class, so pre-registration is required. To register for the class call 406-452-1068.  Proof of vaccination is required. Trainers for the classes are from Petco and F&L Pet Resort.

City of Great Falls Emergency Management, Cascade County Disaster and Emergency Services, Cascade City-County Health Department, and the Governor’s Office of Community Involvement will be presenting information on local hazards and response capabilities, personal preparedness, family emergency planning, mass notification, sheltering-in-place, and other preparedness and response topics.
